At Rooks Heath, we follow the AQA GCSE German specification, which offers clear and accessible assessments across a broad range of topics designed to deepen students’ linguistic and cultural knowledge.

Our goal is to help students of all abilities reach their full potential in German, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to communicate confidently in various contexts. We are passionate about the lifelong benefits that learning a language can offer and firmly believe that language learning should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for all students.

The German GCSE syllabus is structured around three key themes:

1. People and Lifestyle
2. Popular Culture
3. Communication and the World Around Us

These themes are explored through all four exam components: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Students will engage with these topics by providing information and sharing their opinions about the themes in relation to their own experiences, as well as those of people from German-speaking countries and communities.

Students will develop valuable transferable skills through the course, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to articulate thoughts clearly, which are applicable to further study and the workplace. The wide-ranging topics within the specification are designed to inspire students who have an interest in German culture and the countries where German is spoken.

To support our students, the German department offers additional help through Homework Club and Masterclasses, ensuring all students have the opportunity to succeed. We also organise an annual trip to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, providing a fun and immersive cultural experience.
