Mathematics & Further Mathematics

Key Stage 5 Mathematics 

At Key Stage 5, students have the option to study either A Level Mathematics or a combination of A Level Mathematics and A Level Further Mathematics. These courses provide a comprehensive foundation in both pure and applied mathematics, preparing students for further study or careers in fields such as engineering, economics, computer science, and more. 

A Level Mathematics 

In A Level Mathematics, students explore a balanced curriculum that includes Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics (Statistics and Mechanics). 

In Year 12, students build on their algebraic knowledge, delving into topics like the binomial expansion, calculus, hypothesis testing, and the principles of forces and motion. These fundamental concepts form the basis for more advanced mathematical reasoning. 

In Year 13, students deepen their understanding with more complex topics such as normal distribution, projectiles, kinematics, and mathematical modelling. The emphasis shifts towards constructing mathematical models and solving real-world problems using a variety of techniques, including technological tools. Students will develop essential skills in areas such as critical thinking, metacognition, decision making, and logical reasoning

A range of differentiated resources, including MyMaths, MEI Further Maths programs, and Integral Maths with GeoGebra, ensures that students receive both visual and theoretical support to enhance their learning. These tools also offer opportunities for rigorous assessment and progress tracking. 

Students will sit for the Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE Mathematics examination, which is made up of two Pure Mathematics papers and one Statistics and Mechanics paper. Each exam is 2 hours long and contributes 33.3% to the final qualification. 

A Level Further Mathematics 

For those who wish to challenge themselves further, A Level Further Mathematics offers an extension of the core Mathematics curriculum. In this course, students study the compulsory Core Pure Mathematics alongside options such as Decision Mathematics and either Further Pure 1 or Mechanics

This course is designed for students who are keen to explore advanced mathematical concepts, including imaginary and complex numbers, Argand diagrams, and hyperbolic functions. The curriculum requires students to engage with complex problem-solving and apply deeper mathematical reasoning. 

Students will sit for the Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE Further Mathematics examination, which consists of four papers: two Core Pure and two Further Mathematics Option papers. Each paper is 1 hour 30 minutes long and contributes 25% to the final qualification.
