Mathematics

Mathematics at Key Stage 4 

At Key Stage 4, students will engage in a comprehensive and challenging GCSE Mathematics curriculum, designed to deepen their understanding and equip them with essential mathematical skills. The course covers six key areas: 

  • Number. 

  • Algebra. 

  • Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change. 

  • Geometry and Measures. 

  • Probability. 

  • Statistics. 

Each area is approached through a series of progressive units, introducing new concepts and skills that build upon prior knowledge. In Years 10 and 11, particular focus is given to the development of reasoning and proof skills, as well as applying mathematical concepts to real-life scenarios through modelling questions. 

Stretching the More Able 

To support our more able mathematicians, we offer the opportunity for Year 11 students to study for the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics alongside their GCSE Mathematics. This qualification provides additional challenge and prepares students for advanced mathematical study, further enhancing their academic portfolio. It also allows students to be better prepared for the GCE A Level Mathematics course, should they wish to pursue that at A levels. 

Resources 

Students are provided with access to the Kerboodle platform, which offers online textbooks and corresponding homework books. This resource allows students to reinforce their learning outside the classroom and access tailored materials to suit their individual needs. The platform supports the development of GCSE Mathematics content and provides an interactive way for students to engage with the course. 

Key Skills Developed 

Throughout the course, students will develop a range of important skills, including: 

  • Logical thinking and problem-solving 

  • Identifying patterns and formulating rules to describe results 

  • Data processing and interpretation 

  • Application of mathematics in real-life situations, promoting an understanding of its relevance to daily life 

  • ICT skills, using technology to aid in processing and presenting information 

These skills are not only essential for mathematics but are highly transferable to other subjects and future career pathways. 

Assessment 

All students in Key Stage 4 will sit the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics examination, which is available at two levels: 

  • Higher Level (grades 9-4) 

  • Foundation Level (grades 5-1) 

The level of the examination taken by each student is determined by their ability and teacher recommendation, ensuring that every student is appropriately challenged. 

The course is assessed via three examinations worth 80 marks each in Year 11: 

  • Paper 1: Non-calculator 

  • Paper 2: Calculator 

  • Paper 3: Calculator

A strong pass in GCSE Mathematics provides students with crucial skills for both higher education and the world of work. Whether our students plan to study subjects like engineering, economics, or computer science, or enter a career in fields such as finance, healthcare, or technology, a good understanding of mathematics will serve them well.
