At Rooks Heath we follow the AQA GCSE French specification, which has clear and accessible assessments, with a wide range of topics which aim to expand students’ linguistic and cultural knowledge.
Our aim is to enable students of all abilities to develop their French language skills to their full potential, equipping them with the knowledge to communicate in a variety of contexts with confidence. We are passionate about the benefits that learning a language can bring. We strongly believe in languages as a skill for life and something students should enjoy and find rewarding. It can lead to sixth form courses such as a self-contained AS level (one year) or a full A level (two years) as well as university courses such as a University degree as a main course of study or as an additional component in combination with other disciplines. With the world becoming a global village, speaking only one language will definitely shut you out. The business world is in need of people who are multi-lingual because of the global economy. You will be an asset to any business with more than one language at your disposal. The ability to speak French in addition to having good communication skills in English can be the difference between make or break for Britain's emerging business leaders. Furthermore, GCSE languages are now becoming an entrance requirement for most top universities.
The French syllabus covers three distinct themes. These themes apply to all four question papers. Students are expected to understand and provide information and opinions about these themes relating to their own experiences and those of other people, including people in countries/communities where French is spoken.
Students will be tested in listening, reading, speaking and writing and will develop transferable skills, relevant to further study and the world of work. The range of topics within the specification aims to inspire students who are interested in the French culture and French speaking countries.
The French Department supports its students and offers them help and support in after school Homework Club, Intervention and Booster sessions.
